Bird Heaven

I am eager to share a bird story that other gardeners or nature lovers may find interesting. My wife Michele and I travel thousands of kilometres around Australia each year in search of native succulent plants, or other interesting or unusual dry climate plants that we then research and often trial in our one acre garden. After researching and trialling plants for several years, I routinely write articles for magazines and books about garden-worthy plants, especially if they are drought hardy.

 

Recently, over the 2015 Christmas break we went about 1,500 kilometres north of our Melbourne home to visit a couple on a secluded rural bush property near Armidale, NSW. Trevor and Kareen live down a winding 2 km bush track through their own tall natural eucalypt forest, which then opens out into cattle grazed clearings with a farm house and sheds in the centre. This was our third visit to explore the habitat of a succulent orchid Bulbophyllum elisae, which grows naturally here on large granite boulder outcrops overlooking the valley which has a small stream running for about 3 km through their property.......
